Approach
I am a qualified integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, drawing on several approaches depending your needs and situation. These approaches include established approaches such as person-centred counselling, cognitive-behaviour therapy, rational-emotive behaviour therapy, solution focussed therapy, transactional analysis, gestalt, and 12-step facilitation therapy. I believe that no single approach to psychotherapy is universally superior; it is necessary to use different therapeutic approaches for different people and circumstances rather than stick to a one-size-fits-all approach. However, most important for the success of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client.
Qualifications
My formal training is derived from a BA (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy (University of Southampton, UK) and a Diploma in Counselling and Communication (Australian College of Applied Psychology). This has involved a long period of intensive training in a variety of therapeutic approaches to degree level, and I am constantly continuing my training. I am currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
Experience
I currently work in private practice in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. I was previously a counsellor at 'The Priory' in England - a major private mental health hospital and part of Europe's leading independent provider of acute mental health services. During this time I worked with clients with addictions (alcohol, drugs, behavioural), behavioural issues, depression, family problems and other relationship and mental health issues. I have several years' experience in working with people recovering from alcoholism and addiction in 12-step fellowships and so I am happy to work with this framework as an approach to recovery. Prior to my counselling and psychotherapy career, I studied health and fitness and worked in the health and fitness industry for 10 years in fitness, sales and senior management positions in major fitness clubs in the UK. This improves my understanding of the interaction between mental physical health, and of the demands of stressful work situations.
Accreditation
I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, one of the largest and most influential counselling and psychotherapy associations in the world, and I abide by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. My Diploma was approved by the Australian Counselling Association, Australia's largest association of counsellors and psychotherapists, and my Degree is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
