Welcome
I’m Dr Carla Shorrock, a Counselling Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I work with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational, and psychological challenges, and I’m passionate about offering therapy that feels grounded, authentic, and genuinely transformative.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and rooted in the belief that people grow best in a space where they feel understood, respected, and met as a whole human being, not just a set of symptoms. I bring both professional expertise and authenticity to my work, helping clients connect with their strengths, make sense of their experiences, and move toward a more fulfilling and balanced life.
Qualifications & Professional Background
I completed my Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (D.Psych) after more than two decades of academic and clinical training, whilst maintaining a private practice, both here and internationally. My qualifications include:
• Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (D.Psych)
• Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology
• Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Hons)
• Diploma in Counselling
I have extensive experience across NHS services, psychological therapy teams, brain-injury services, higher education settings, and addiction services.
Addiction & Recovery Expertise
A significant part of my work has involved supporting clients with addiction and recovery. I have worked with individuals at various stages of their recovery journey, from active addiction through to long-term maintenance and emotional growth in recovery. This experience allows me to work sensitively and effectively with the emotional, relational, and behavioural patterns that often accompany addiction, helping clients develop stability, insight, and healthier ways of coping.
For clients who are part of a 12-step fellowship, I bring 25 years of in-depth knowledge of the 12-step model to work with them to enhance their growth within that framework.
Adaptable, Integrative Practice
My clinical work at Headway, a brain injury charity, strengthened my ability to adapt therapy to where each person is in their journey. This means I tailor interventions to cognitive, emotional, and practical needs, ensuring therapy remains accessible, paced, and supportive, whatever someone is bringing.
Across all settings, I draw from:
- Person-Centred Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
I integrate these approaches flexibly, always working collaboratively to tailor therapy to the individual.
How I Work
Therapy with me is centred on building a strong, safe, honest working relationship. Together, we explore what’s bringing you to therapy, identify patterns or experiences that may be keeping you stuck, and develop tools and strategies that help you move forward.
Clients often come to me for support with:
- Addiction, recovery, and emotional sobriety
- Anxiety and stress
- Low mood or depression
- Trauma and emotional neglect
- Relationship and attachment difficulties
- Self-esteem and identity concerns
- Work-related pressure and burnout
- Life transitions and loss
- Feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed
I offer a balance of depth and practicality—space for reflection alongside evidence-based tools—always tailored to your needs and personal goals.
